Artist's notes: I spent a morning in August 1982 with
Richard where I snapped this photo of him.

I am still amazed and grateful that Richard was willing to spend
as much time as he did with a fan. *
 
Only tiny little hints of problems, like the specs of gold
in my painting, showed up in our conversation that day.
I was trying to sell American Ginseng at the time and
Richard's interest in its effects on alcoholism, and
genital herpes, now, as I look back, seem to hint at
something beneath the surface.

But as a fan, at the time, I was too blind to see, or to in awe to
imagine anything wrong.
